Planning from day one
We plan International GCSE subject choices with the USAf Paragraph 13 / Group I–V rules in mind — so the choices made at age 14 don't close pathways at age 18.
How International GCSE results count towards a USAf matric exemption.
Pearson Edexcel International GCSE is recognised by the USAf Matriculation Board as part of the United Kingdom examinations pathway (Paragraph 13). At International GCSE level, individual subjects contribute as Ordinary Level subjects within the overall exemption requirement.
What grade counts as an “Ordinary Level subject”?
USAf wording: “any subject offered for and passed with a symbol of A, B or C at the Ordinary Level, the General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) level or the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) level prescribed for the examinations conducted by the examining bodies mentioned in Annexure I.”
So for USAf exemption purposes, a Pearson Edexcel International GCSE subject needs a minimum of grade C (or the equivalent on the 9–1 scale) to count.

Paragraph 13 of the USAf regulations is the standard route for UK examining body candidates. It states:
“the Committee of Principals shall issue a certificate of complete exemption to a person who passed the examination of an examining body in the United Kingdom... a minimum of either five subjects approved by the Committee of Principals for this purpose, at least two of which shall be approved Advanced Level subjects and the remainder approved Ordinary Level subjects, or four approved subjects, three of which shall be approved Advanced Level subjects.”
International GCSE subjects make up the “Ordinary Level” half of this rule. The Advanced Level subjects come from International A Level study at the next stage. Apex maps each family’s IGCSE subject combination against this rule so the eventual Full Exemption stays achievable.
The Two-Sitting Rule (Paragraph 15) also applies across the whole exemption pathway: “A candidate shall satisfy all the requirements of subparagraphs 1.a and b at not more than two examination sittings.” Even with Pearson’s two IGCSE series per year + three IAL series per year, USAf-qualifying subjects must still fit within two examination sittings combined.

International GCSE — parent questions we hear most often.
How many exam sessions a year does the International GCSE have?
Two. Pearson states: “International GCSE is offered in May-June (Summer) and November each year.” (qualifications.pearson.com). The third session you may have heard about (January) is offered at International A Level, not at International GCSE.
Can International GCSE subjects be examined modularly?
For many subjects, yes. Pearson states: “We now offer a choice of linear or modular assessment for many of our International GCSEs.” (qualifications.pearson.com). Whether modular is available for a specific subject depends on the specification — we check this per subject per family.
What International GCSE grade do my child's results need for USAf to count them?
For USAf exemption purposes, the Matriculation Board's definition of an “Ordinary Level subject” requires “a symbol of A, B or C at the Ordinary Level, the General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) level or the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) level.” (mb.usaf.ac.za/definitions). Grade C is the minimum that counts; in practice we recommend targeting higher grades for the foundation subjects that feed into International A Level study.
Does USAf recognise Pearson Edexcel International GCSE the same way it recognises Cambridge IGCSE?
USAf's published definition of “IGCSE Level subject” specifically names Cambridge International Examinations. Pearson Edexcel International qualifications are recognised by USAf via the United Kingdom examinations pathway set out in Paragraph 13 of the Matriculation Board regulations. Both pathways lead to the same Certificate of Complete Exemption when their respective requirements are met.
How early should we start International GCSE tutoring?
Subject choices made at the start of International GCSE feed into International A Level options two years later, which in turn determine whether the USAf Group I–V coverage requirements can be met. The earlier the planning, the more options stay open. Apex typically recommends starting tutoring conversations in Grade 9 equivalent if Edexcel is the chosen route.
