Pearson Edexcel International A Level
— the route to a USAf Full Exemption.

Pearson Edexcel's International A Level is the advanced two-year qualification. Pearson states the qualifications “have a modular structure” and are “comparable to GCE AS/A levels, as confirmed by NARIC.” At Apex, the IAL is the primary route into a USAf Certificate of Complete Exemption under Paragraph 13.

What is the International A Level?

The Pearson Edexcel International A Level — in Pearson's own words.

Pearson positions the International Advanced Levels as “globally recognised qualifications which open doors to top universities worldwide.” Two structural features are central: the qualifications “have a modular structure,” and they are “comparable to GCE AS/A levels, as confirmed by NARIC.”

For South African families, that NARIC comparability matters: it places the Pearson Edexcel IAL in the same regulatory category as UK GCE A Levels under USAf's Paragraph 13 — the Full Exemption pathway.

USAf Paragraph 13 — Full Exemption

The two valid subject combinations for a Full Exemption.

USAf Paragraph 13 sets out two valid combinations of UK-examining-body subjects for a Certificate of Complete Exemption. Both routes need “at least one subject selected from” each of Groups I, II, and III (English Language; a second language; sciences/mathematics).

Modular sitting strategy

Plan units across series

Apex maps which Pearson IAL units to sit in which series (January, May–June or October) so the modular structure works for the learner — and so the Two-Sitting Rule (Paragraph 15) is respected from day one.

USAf detail

Grade rules, the Two-Sitting Rule, and what counts.

The Two-Sitting Rule (Paragraph 15)

USAf wording: “A candidate shall satisfy all the requirements... at not more than two examination sittings.”

Even though Pearson offers three IAL series per year (January, May–June, October), your USAf-qualifying subjects must be completed across no more than two sittings combined. The session flexibility helps with scheduling, not with the Two-Sitting requirement.

Read more — what grade counts at International A Level + the Ordinary Level threshold

Ordinary Level subject grade: USAf wording: “any subject offered for and passed with a symbol of A, B or C at the Ordinary Level, the General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) level or the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) level.” So Apex Edexcel learners on the IGCSE half of the pathway need a minimum of grade C at International GCSE for those results to count.

Advanced Level subject: defined per Annexure I of the regulations. The specific minimum Advanced Level grade USAf will count is set in the regulations Annexure (not currently quoted here — Apex confirms this per family).

Two-Sitting Rule: Paragraph 15 — USAf-qualifying subjects must be completed across no more than two examination sittings. The IAL session flexibility (3 series per year) helps with scheduling but does not waive this requirement.

Frequently Asked Questions

International A Level — parent questions we hear most often.

How many subjects does my child need at International A Level for a USAf Full Exemption?

Either route works under USAf Paragraph 13: (A) 5 subjects total with at least 2 at A Level + 3 at O Level/IGCSE; or (B) 4 subjects total with 3 at A Level + 1 at O Level/IGCSE. Both routes require at least one subject from each of Groups I, II and III. (mb.usaf.ac.za/paragraph-13).

What's the minimum International A Level grade USAf will count?

Paragraph 13 itself does not quote a single minimum grade; “Advanced Level subject” is defined per Annexure I of the regulations. Apex confirms the specific Annexure-defined minimum per family during planning, so the right grades are clear before exam entries are made.

How does the Two-Sitting Rule work alongside three exam series a year?

Pearson lets you sit IAL units in January, May–June or October — that's the session flexibility. But USAf Paragraph 15 still requires that “a candidate shall satisfy all the requirements... at not more than two examination sittings.” So your USAf-qualifying IGCSE + IAL subjects must be combined across no more than two sittings. Apex plans this from the first IGCSE consultation. (mb.usaf.ac.za/paragraph-15).

Is Pearson Edexcel International A Level treated the same as UK GCE A Level?

Pearson states the IAL is “comparable to GCE AS/A levels, as confirmed by NARIC.” (qualifications.pearson.com). For USAf purposes, both fall within the same Paragraph 13 United Kingdom examinations pathway.

Can Apex tutors help with USAf applications themselves?

Yes. Apex's tutoring includes guidance through the USAf Matriculation Board application process — document checklist, application form review, and pathway mapping (whether Paragraph 13 Full Exemption or Paragraph 27 Conditional Exemption applies).
