How International AS results count towards a USAf matric exemption.
USAf treats Pearson Edexcel International AS Level subjects as Advanced Subsidiary Level subjects under the United Kingdom examinations pathway. There are two regulation paragraphs that matter — Paragraph 13 (Full Exemption, if learner continues to IAL) and Paragraph 27 (Conditional Exemption based on AS subjects).

What grade counts as an "Advanced Subsidiary subject"?
"any subject offered for and passed with a symbol A, B, C or D at Advanced Subsidiary Level or Advanced Supplementary Level as prescribed for the examinations of the examining bodies mentioned in Annexure I."
So for USAf purposes, an International AS Level subject needs a minimum of grade D to count towards exemption pathways. Apex typically targets higher grades — a D is a floor, not a goal.

Paragraph 27 is the USAf pathway that uses International AS Level subjects directly: "the Committee of Principals shall issue a certificate of conditional exemption to a person who passed a minimum of four Advanced Subsidiary Level subjects and one Ordinary Level subject in an examination conducted... by examining bodies in the United Kingdom."
Plus: "the subjects by virtue of which the certificate was obtained... have been passed at not more than two examination sittings." If your learner continues to full International A Level, Paragraph 13 (Full Exemption) becomes the relevant route instead. Apex maps either pathway depending on the family's plan.

Is the International AS a standalone qualification or only half of a full A Level?
Both, depending on the learner. Pearson describes the IAS as the first half of a full International A Level, and the qualifications collectively "have a modular structure." Some Apex families use IAS as a standalone qualification feeding a USAf Conditional Exemption (Paragraph 27); others continue to full IAL for a Full Exemption (Paragraph 13).
What International AS grade does USAf count?
USAf's published definition of "Advanced Subsidiary subject" requires "a symbol A, B, C or D at Advanced Subsidiary Level or Advanced Supplementary Level." So grade D is the minimum that counts towards exemption pathways (mb.usaf.ac.za/definitions).
What's the minimum number of AS Level subjects needed for a USAf Conditional Exemption?
Paragraph 27 states "four Advanced Subsidiary Level subjects and one Ordinary Level subject" (the Ordinary Level subject comes from International GCSE study). Plus the Two-Sitting Rule applies — those qualifying subjects must be completed across no more than two examination sittings (mb.usaf.ac.za/paragraph-27).
Should we aim for IAS or full IAL?
That depends on the learner's intended degree path, university entry requirements, and academic capacity. A Full Exemption (via Paragraph 13, requiring International A Level subjects) opens more SA university options than a Conditional Exemption.
