ABOUT THE PYP
What Is the IB Primary Years Programme?
The IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) is the first stage of the International Baccalaureate framework, designed for children aged 3 to 12. It introduces young learners to inquiry-based education — where children ask questions, investigate ideas, and build understanding across subjects rather than learning topics in isolation.
The PYP is built around six transdisciplinary themes that connect learning to the real world. Maths, language, science, and the arts are not taught as separate silos but woven together around big ideas — like “how the world works” or “who we are.”

Common Questions About IB PYP Tutoring
The IB Primary Years Programme is designed for children aged 3 to 12 — from pre-school through to the end of primary school. The framework adapts to each age range, starting with play-based inquiry in the early years and progressing to more structured subject-area exploration by the end of PYP.
PYP teaches subjects in an interconnected way through six transdisciplinary themes — rather than as separate silos. So instead of a maths lesson, a science lesson, and an English lesson, students might explore a single big idea (like "how the world works") using maths, science, and English together. It's designed to build curious, globally minded thinkers rather than students who memorise for tests.
Yes. Many children move into IB schools mid-way through primary school, or come from a national curriculum background. Apex tutors regularly help students transition into the PYP — building confidence with inquiry-based learning, supporting language transitions, and filling any gaps from a previous curriculum.
Apex provides one-on-one PYP tutoring in literacy and language (including English as an Additional Language), mathematics, the sciences, social studies, and language acquisition (French, Spanish, Mandarin and others on request). Sessions are tailored to each child's age and current understanding.
All Apex PYP tutoring is delivered online by default through the MyApex App, which works on phones, tablets, and laptops. Limited in-person tutoring is available in select areas of South Africa.
