South Africa's Class of 2024 Achieves an 87.3% Pass Rate
The Department of Basic Education announced with pride that South Africa’s matric class of 2024 achieved an impressive 87.3% pass rate. This milestone reflects the determination of learners, educators, and stakeholders who have faced numerous challenges in recent years.

A Year of Perseverance
The matric class of 2024 tackled their final year under unique conditions. From navigating lingering disruptions caused by the pandemic to adapting to innovations in online learning, these students displayed resilience and commitment. Their success is a testament to their hard work and adaptability in an ever-changing educational landscape.
Breaking Down the Statistics
A total of 897,163 candidates registered for the National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations in 2024, of which 726,883 wrote their final exams. Among these candidates, over 634,000 students passed, with 278,221 qualifying for admission to bachelor’s degree programs—marking a remarkable improvement from previous years. Diploma and higher certificate passes also showed a year-on-year increase, further highlighting the nationwide focus on achieving academic success.
Notably, female students excelled, contributing to 52.4% of all bachelor passes. Furthermore, science and mathematics saw an uptick in the number of high achievers. The performance in these subjects highlights the emphasis placed on STEM education, a critical focus area for South Africa’s economic growth.
Provincial Performances
The provincial pass rates further highlight the nationwide commitment to academic excellence. Gauteng led the way with a pass rate of 89.9%, followed closely by the Western Cape at 89.1%. KwaZulu-Natal saw a notable improvement with an 85.6% pass rate, while Limpopo and the Eastern Cape, often considered underperforming provinces, demonstrated significant growth with pass rates of 80.2% and 78.3%, respectively. These regional successes are a reflection of targeted interventions and local strategies implemented to enhance learning outcomes.
The Role of Educators and Technology
Teachers have played a critical role in ensuring students’ success, especially during a period of rapid technological advancement. The increased integration of blended learning methods, combining in-person and online teaching, has enabled educators to reach more students effectively. Initiatives such as online revision sessions, recorded lectures, and virtual study groups have complemented traditional teaching methods.
Apex Academic Centre has been at the forefront of this transformation, providing quality tutoring to empower learners with the skills and confidence needed to excel. With a student-centered approach, we’ve helped bridge learning gaps and reinforced foundational knowledge, particularly in subjects like mathematics, physical sciences, and accounting.
The Importance of Support Structures
Parents, guardians, and community organizations also contributed to the matric class's success. Emotional and academic support networks were vital in helping students manage the stresses of their final year. The contributions of initiatives like weekend study camps and extra classes sponsored by government and private entities cannot be overlooked.
Moreover, online platforms, such as Apex Academic Centre, offered personalized learning opportunities that addressed individual needs and prepared students effectively. A survey conducted by the Department of Basic Education revealed that over 80% of learners who utilized online supplementary education reported improved understanding and performance.
Challenges and the Road Ahead
While the 87.3% pass rate is a cause for celebration, it also highlights areas for improvement. Approximately 12.7% of learners did not achieve a passing mark, indicating a continued need to address inequality and access to quality education. Schools in rural and under-resourced areas still face challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, limited access to technology, and insufficient teaching resources.
The focus must remain on improving teacher training, expanding access to e-learning, and fostering a culture of academic excellence across all schools. Moreover, initiatives aimed at addressing socio-economic disparities must be strengthened to ensure every child has the opportunity to thrive.
