About the MYP

What is the IB Middle Years Programme?

The IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) is a five-year framework for students aged 11 to 16. It bridges the inquiry foundation laid in the PYP with the academic rigour of the Diploma Programme — and it's the stage where serious study habits are formed.

MYP students study eight subject groups alongside developing approaches to learning, taking action through service, and producing a major Personal Project in their final year. Subjects aren't taught in isolation — students explore concepts and global contexts that connect maths to history, science to language, and so on. At Apex, we tutor MYP students one-on-one online — strengthening subject understanding, building DP-ready study habits, and supporting the cross-disciplinary thinking the IB demands.

How Apex Helps

How Apex tutors MYP students.

MYP is where students transition from "learning to read" to "reading to learn." Apex tutors meet them at that pivotal stage and prepare them for what's next.

Subject Mastery

Subject-specialist tutors across all eight MYP groups. Maths, sciences, languages, humanities — whichever subject your child needs most support in, we have a tutor for it.

Study Habits That Last

The MYP demands time management, note-taking discipline, and self-direction. Apex tutors build these habits early — so your child enters the DP already knowing how to study at IB level.

Personal Project Support

The MYP Personal Project is the capstone of the programme — a self-directed long-form project. Apex tutors guide students through topic selection, research, structure, and presentation.

MYP FAQs

Common questions about IB MYP tutoring.

What ages and years is the MYP for?

The MYP is a five-year framework for students aged 11 to 16 — covering the years between primary school and the IB Diploma Programme. In most schools that's Grade 6 to Grade 10 (or Years 7 to 11 in UK terms).

How is the MYP assessed?

MYP subjects are graded on a 1-7 scale based on subject-specific criteria. Students receive scores across four assessment criteria per subject, and final grades are determined by their performance against these criteria. Optional MYP eAssessment (external exams) is available in the final year.

What is the MYP Personal Project?

The Personal Project is a long-form self-directed project completed in the final year of MYP. Students choose their own topic, set their own goals, and produce a tangible outcome — from a written report to a creative work or community service project — alongside a structured report documenting their process. It's the capstone of MYP and excellent preparation for the IB Extended Essay.

How does the MYP prepare students for the DP?

MYP develops three things that make DP achievable: deep cross-disciplinary thinking (helping students see connections between subjects), strong study habits (time management, note-taking, self-direction), and confidence with long-form independent work like the Personal Project. Students who complete MYP enter DP already familiar with the IB's approach.

Which MYP subjects does Apex tutor?

Apex provides one-on-one MYP tutoring across all eight MYP subject groups: Language & Literature, Language Acquisition (French, Spanish, Mandarin and more), Individuals & Societies, Sciences, Mathematics, Arts, Physical & Health Education, and Design. We also support the Personal Project from topic selection to final submission.
