Pearson Edexcel International qualifications are issued by Pearson — one of the largest examining bodies in the UK. The international variants (International GCSE, International AS Level, International A Level) are studied in over 95 countries.
They are recognised by the Universities South Africa (USAf) Matriculation Board under Paragraph 13 of the Board's regulations — the pathway for examinations of UK examining bodies.

Three a year at IAL
Pearson states: "International A Level (IAL) is offered in January, May-June (Summer) and October each year." At International GCSE, Pearson offers two sessions: "May-June (Summer) and November." The extra January IAL session helps families spread exam load, retake, or accelerate.
Bank results across series
Pearson states the International A Level qualifications "have a modular structure." Students can sit individual units across multiple exam series and bank results. At International GCSE, Pearson offers "a choice of linear or modular assessment for many of our International GCSEs."
Comparable with UK GCE
Pearson states the International A Level is "Comparable to GCE AS/A levels, as confirmed by NARIC."

Pearson Edexcel International qualifications are recognised by the Universities South Africa (USAf) Matriculation Board under Paragraph 13 of the Board's regulations — the pathway for "the examination of an examining body in the United Kingdom." This is the route that leads to a USAf Certificate of Complete Exemption, the document South African universities require for bachelor's degree entry where the school-leaving qualification is not the NSC.

Complete in no more than two sittings
"A candidate shall satisfy all the requirements... at not more than two examination sittings."
Even at International A Level — where Pearson offers three exam series per year (January, May–June and October) — your USAf-qualifying subjects must still be completed across no more than two sittings. The session flexibility helps with scheduling; it does not waive the two-sitting requirement.
The certificates available to Edexcel learners
USAf issues several types of exemption certificate. The ones most relevant to Pearson Edexcel learners are:
Complete Exemption (Para 13)
The standard route. International A Level + International GCSE subjects meeting USAf requirements with Group I–V coverage. Unlocks bachelor's degree entry at SA public universities.
Conditional Exemption (Para 27)
Available where a learner has "four Advanced Subsidiary Level subjects and one Ordinary Level subject" — i.e. an International AS Level pathway.
Mature Age & Foreign Conditional
Separate USAf regulation (covered in the Matriculation Board's published guide). Different criteria apply; the Apex team can assist.

Is Pearson Edexcel accepted by South African universities?
Yes. Pearson Edexcel International qualifications are recognised by the USAf Matriculation Board under Paragraph 13 of the Board's regulations — the pathway for examinations of UK examining bodies. Successful applicants are issued a USAf Certificate of Complete Exemption, which is what South African universities require for bachelor's degree entry where the school-leaving qualification is not the National Senior Certificate. The Pearson Edexcel International A Level is also formally "comparable to GCE AS/A levels, as confirmed by NARIC."
How is Edexcel different from Cambridge?
Drawing on Pearson's own published information: (1) Exam sessions: Pearson states "International A Level (IAL) is offered in January, May-June (Summer) and October each year" — three series at A Level. At International GCSE, Pearson offers "May-June (Summer) and November" — two series. (2) Modular structure: Pearson states the International A Level qualifications "have a modular structure" and that "a choice of linear or modular assessment" is available for many International GCSEs. (3) NARIC comparability: Pearson states the IAL is "comparable to GCE AS/A levels, as confirmed by NARIC." Both Pearson Edexcel and Cambridge International qualifications can lead to a USAf Certificate of Complete Exemption, via their respective recognised pathways.
Does Apex tutor online or in person?
Both. We deliver online one-on-one Edexcel tutoring via the MyApex App (sessions are recorded for revision), and in-person tutoring across all nine South African provinces. Many families mix the two — regular online sessions during term, plus in-person intensives before each modular exam sitting.
How early should we start with Edexcel tutoring?
The earlier the better, especially because USAf exemption planning depends on subject choices made at the start of IGCSE (around age 14). We typically recommend a consultation in Grade 9 equivalent if Edexcel is the chosen route, so that the IGCSE → IAS → IAL subject map is built deliberately. For learners already in IAS or IAL, we focus on exam technique, modular planning and topic gaps.
How are Edexcel exam grades converted for USAf?
USAf maps Edexcel IGCSE grades (9–1 or A*–G) and IAS/IAL grades (A*–E) to South African NSC equivalents. The Two-Sitting Rule applies: USAf Paragraph 15 states "a candidate shall satisfy all the requirements... at not more than two examination sittings." Even though Edexcel offers three sessions per year at IAL, your USAf-qualifying subjects still need to fit within two series.
