From a boy who could not go to school, to the man who built Apex.
Brian Maphosa was born in Bulawayo in 1991 and raised in rural Plumtree, one of thirteen children. When his family could no longer afford his schooling, his education stopped after primary school. While other children walked to class, he herded his father’s cattle.
The dream did not stop with the schooling. At nineteen he moved to Bulawayo, worked in construction to pay his own way, and at around twenty-one went back to school having last sat in a classroom at thirteen. He studied at night, supported by tutors, and worked through O-Levels and then A-Level Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics.
Tutoring is what brought him back, so tutoring is where he began giving back: first as a volunteer helping O-Level students through Mathematics and Integrated Sciences, later as an assistant teacher. That is where he noticed the thing that has shaped everything since. Students were not failing for want of teaching. They were failing for want of teaching built around them.
In April 2019 he left his teaching post and founded Apex Academic Centre, with limited funding, limited resources, and in a country he had not grown up in. What began as one tutor became a question he could not answer alone: parents needed subjects he could not teach, and they needed to know who they were trusting with their child. That question became MyApex.
