Matric Rewrite Results Release Date: When They Come Out and How to Get Them

The papers are written and the waiting starts. Most of what is published online about when rewrite marks arrive is guesswork, so this sets out only what the Department of Basic Education has actually confirmed, and what it has not.

What is the matric rewrite results release date?

For the October and November 2026 examinations, no release date has been announced. As at 15 October 2026 the Department of Basic Education has not published one, and any specific January 2027 date you see online is not official. In the previous cycle the Minister announced the outcome on 12 January 2026 and results reached candidates on 13 January 2026, 46 days after the last paper.

That is the honest answer, and it is worth more than a confident wrong one. Several sites currently publish an exact 2027 date with no source behind it. Below is what the Department has actually confirmed, what the previous cycle did, where the real date will appear first, and what to do with the marks once they arrive.

01

Has the Department of Basic Education announced a date yet?

No. Checked on 15 October 2026, the Department’s own results page still carries the 2025 cycle only. No date for the October and November 2026 examinations has been published. The date is normally confirmed in a media statement in late December or early January, shortly before the announcement itself, rather than months in advance.

When it is published it will appear on the Department of Basic Education’s Release of NSC Examination Results page and in a ministerial media statement. That page is the one to bookmark. It is also where last cycle’s dates, fees and deadlines below come from.

Treat any exact 2027 date you see today as unverified. If a site states one without linking a Department media statement, it is an estimate presented as a fact. The date is not a secret being withheld; it has simply not been set publicly yet.

02

What happened in the previous cycle, and what does it tell you?

The 2025 examinations concluded on 27 November 2025. The Minister of Basic Education announced the outcome on 12 January 2026, and results were released to candidates on 13 January 2026, also appearing on the Department’s website from 6am that day. That is 46 days from the final paper to the announcement, which is the only gap worth reasoning from.

Those are the Department’s own published dates, not an estimate. They are useful as a planning anchor and nothing more: a cycle can move for reasons that have nothing to do with the previous one. If you need a working assumption for university applications or a job start date, use mid-January and confirm it the moment the official statement appears.

One claim worth retiring: you will often read that results come out “six to eight weeks after the last paper”. The Department publishes no such rule. The single verifiable figure is the 46 days above, from one cycle.

03

How do you actually get your results?

Three ways, and the first is the one that matters. Collect your statement of results from the school or examination centre where you wrote, because that is the document you will need for applications. Results also appear on the Department’s website from early morning on release day, and in accredited newspapers, which now publish examination numbers and results only, with no names, surnames or identity numbers.

The website and the newspaper tell you your marks. They are not proof of them. Every university application, bursary and employer wants the statement of results issued by your examination centre, so collect it rather than screenshotting a web page. If a result is missing on release day, the Department’s own guidance is to go to the centre where you wrote rather than wait for the website to update.

Once you have the marks, the question becomes what they let you do next, which is covered in the guide to what happens after a matric rewrite.

04

What if a mark looks wrong? Re-mark, re-check and viewing scripts

You can apply for a re-check, a re-mark, or to view the script, each at a published fee and each on a deadline. In the previous cycle applications opened on release day, 13 January 2026, and closed on 27 January 2026, which is the fourteen days the Department describes as usual. Scripts can only be viewed after a re-mark or re-check has been done.

The fees and the sequence, from the Department’s results page:

Service Fee per subject Deadline
Re-check R30.00 Usually 14 days after results are released
Re-mark R120.00 Usually 14 days after results are released
Viewing of a script R230.00 7 days after the re-mark or re-check result

Applications go through your school or the district office in your province, or online at eservices.gov.za. The instructions are printed on the reverse of the statement of results, which is another reason to collect the physical document. A re-check confirms the marks were added correctly; a re-mark has the script marked again. They are different services at different prices, and the cheaper one answers a different question.

The fourteen days are not negotiable and they run from release, not from when you open the envelope. If you are weighing up a re-mark, decide inside the first week. These fees and dates are the Department’s; the Independent Examinations Board runs its own process, below.

05

What if your name or identity number is wrong on the statement?

Report it to the Department, and quickly. In the previous cycle candidates were told to check that names and identity numbers appeared correctly and to report corrections before 20 February 2026, about five weeks after release. Separately, queries about results themselves should be submitted for investigation within 30 days of the release date.

This sounds like administrative detail until a university cannot match your statement to your application, or Umalusi issues a certificate with an error on it. Umalusi, not the school and not any tutoring provider, quality assures the examination and issues the National Senior Certificate, so a mistake carried through at this stage is slow to undo later.

Check three things the day you collect the statement: your full names, your identity number, and that every subject you registered for appears on it.

06

Is the release date the same if you wrote with the IEB?

No, and the fees and deadlines above do not apply either. The Independent Examinations Board is a separate assessment body that runs its own examinations, its own re-mark process and its own timelines. Its public FAQ does not publish a results release date at all, and its re-mark applications open once its results are released rather than on a date fixed in advance.

If you wrote with the Independent Examinations Board, apply for a re-mark or re-check through ieb-online.co.za rather than eservices.gov.za, and arrange a rewrite through the Board’s rewrite address rather than a provincial education department. The Board’s own position is that candidates who wrote the National Senior Certificate with it from 2008 onwards can register to improve their marks.

Two of its rules catch people out. Its May examinations require that you were previously registered at a school registered with the Board and completed the school-based assessment requirements. And a candidate who wrote with a different assessment body has to redo the internal assessments, which means enrolling with a school or distance-learning centre registered with the Board rather than simply entering for the papers. Check the current detail on the Board’s own FAQ before assuming a Department rule applies to you.

07

Can you still register to improve your marks?

Yes, if you are still a National Senior Certificate candidate, meaning your certificate has not been converted to a Senior Certificate. The Department allows anyone wanting to improve previous results to register as a part-time candidate. Registration closes before 15 March of the year you intend to write, and the examinations themselves run from October to December.

One correction worth making, because older articles across the web still get it wrong: the February and March supplementary examination has been phased out and is no longer available. That is the Department’s own wording. Candidates wanting to improve now register for the June examination or the October and November sitting instead. The detail is in what replaced the supplementary exam, and the registration steps are in the 2027 registration guide.

Registering for an examination and enrolling for tuition are two separate things. You register to write with the Department or the Board. Tuition, whether from Apex or anyone else, is a different arrangement and does not enter you for a paper.

End

What to do in the weeks before the date is announced

Decide now what each outcome means, because the window afterwards is short. Know which subjects you would send for a re-mark and what you can afford, know the application deadlines for the courses you want, and know what you would register for if a mark comes back lower than you need. Fourteen days is not long to make those decisions from scratch.

Apex Academic Centre provides tutoring for rewrite candidates, online across the country and in person at confirmed Gauteng venues, for both the Department and Board routes, taught separately. What it does not do is release results, re-mark scripts, issue certificates or register you for an examination: Apex is a tutoring provider, not an examination centre, and no tutoring service can promise a mark.

If the plan after results is another sitting, the useful move is to book the diagnostic session early rather than in the week registration closes. Book a tutor on the MyApex app, or read the parent guide to supporting a rewrite first.

Frequently asked questions

When will the October and November 2026 matric rewrite results be released?

No date has been announced. As at 15 October 2026 the Department of Basic Education has not published a release date for that sitting, and exact January 2027 dates appearing online are not official. In the previous cycle the announcement came on 12 January 2026 and results reached candidates the following day.

How long after the last paper do matric results come out?

There is no published rule. In the 2025 cycle the examinations concluded on 27 November 2025 and the Minister announced the outcome on 12 January 2026, a gap of 46 days. The widely repeated “six to eight weeks” figure does not come from the Department and should not be relied on.

How do I check my matric rewrite results?

Collect the statement of results from the school or examination centre where you wrote, because that is the document applications require. Results also appear on the Department of Basic Education website from early morning on release day, and in accredited newspapers, which publish examination numbers and marks only, without names or identity numbers.

How much does a matric re-mark cost and how long do I have?

The Department charges R30.00 per subject for a re-check and R120.00 per subject for a re-mark, with viewing of a script at R230.00 afterwards. Applications usually close 14 days after results are released, through your school, the district office or eservices.gov.za. The Independent Examinations Board runs a separate process at its own fees.

Are IEB rewrite results released on the same day as DBE results?

Not necessarily. The Independent Examinations Board is a separate assessment body with its own examinations, timelines and re-mark process, and its public FAQ does not publish a results release date. Its re-mark applications open once its own results are released, and are made through its online portal rather than the government one.

Before the date lands

Decide what each outcome means while you still have time.

If the next step is another sitting, the diagnostic session is worth more in November than in the week registration closes.
