Between Exam Papers: A Routine for the Days in Between
The 2026 examinations run from 13 October to 26 November. Only a fraction of those six weeks is spent in a hall. What happens in the days between the papers decides a surprising amount of what happens in them.
For matriculants and parentsWhat should you do between exam papers?
Stop, then switch. Give the paper that just finished about an hour of not thinking about it, then move entirely to the next one. Do not compare answers with anyone, do not re-mark the paper in your head, and do not try to cover a whole subject in a day. The gap is for one or two named topics in the next paper, ordinary meals, and a normal night’s sleep, in that order.
The 2026 National Senior Certificate session runs from 13 October to 26 November on the Department of Basic Education’s timetable, and most of that stretch is gaps rather than papers. If one of the papers still ahead is the one that worries you, you can book a verified tutor on the MyAPEX app for a single session in a gap rather than a programme.
What do the gaps actually look like in 2026?
Tighter than most learners expect, and with a pattern. The two papers of a subject usually sit three days apart with one weekend between them: Mathematics on 23 and 26 October, Physical Sciences on 30 October and 2 November, Life Sciences on 13 and 16 November. There are also four days with no papers at all, on 3, 4, 5 and 9 November, which are the largest revision windows in the whole session.
| Gap | Dates | What it is for |
|---|---|---|
| Maths P1 to P2 | Fri 23 to Mon 26 Oct | One weekend. Trigonometry and geometry only |
| Phys Sci P1 to P2 | Fri 30 Oct to Mon 2 Nov | One weekend. Chemistry only, Physics is done |
| The quiet week | 3, 4, 5 and 9 Nov | No papers. The biggest window in the session |
| Life Sci P1 to P2 | Fri 13 to Mon 16 Nov | One weekend, late in a long six weeks |
Those dates are for CAPS candidates. Cambridge runs 28 September to 13 November, Pearson Edexcel International A Levels 8 to 30 October with International GCSEs from 27 October, and the IB from 23 October to 13 November, so the shape of your gaps depends on your board. Confirm your own papers on the examination permit; the full CAPS list is in our matric exam timetable 2026.
Mark the no-paper days now. The 3rd to the 5th of November is the one stretch long enough to fix something properly. Decide in October what it is for, because a learner six papers deep does not make that decision well on the morning itself.
What should happen in the hour after a paper?
Nothing academic. Eat something, drink water, get out of the building, and let the adrenaline drop. A three-hour paper is physically tiring and the hour afterwards is the worst hour of the whole session for studying, judging your own performance, or making decisions about what to do next. The next paper can wait sixty minutes and will be better served by waiting.
There is a practical reason to plan this rather than leave it to chance. Under the Department’s regulations a candidate may not leave the examination room during the first hour, so a morning paper ends somewhere near midday for most candidates and the afternoon is still ahead. What that afternoon becomes is decided in the first hour of it.
Why are post-mortems so damaging?
Because they convert a finished paper into anxiety about the next one, and they are unreliable. Comparing answers in a corridor tells you what a confident classmate thinks, not what the memorandum says, and nobody has ever improved a mark that way. For Cambridge candidates it is not just unhelpful: their own candidate information says you must not discuss the content of a question paper with any other candidate until the Key Time or the end of the assessment window has passed.
That rule exists because Cambridge runs across many time zones and someone in another country may not have written yet. It is worth knowing even if you write CAPS or IEB, because the principle is sound everywhere: a conversation about question seven benefits nobody who has already handed it in.
The practical version for a household. Agree in advance that the phone goes away for the first hour after each paper, and that nobody at home asks how it went until the evening. Group chats are where post-mortems live, and a learner who is already tired is not well placed to ignore one.
If the nerves are bigger than the paper, our guide to matric exam anxiety covers what helps and when the right call is a professional.
What does the day between two papers look like?
One subject, two short sessions, and an early night. Not a full revision day. Pick the two topics most likely to be asked in the next paper and that you are least sure of, work through questions on them rather than rereading, and stop at a set time. For a Paper 1 to Paper 2 gap the job is narrower still: only the content of Paper 2, because Paper 1 is finished and cannot be improved.
That narrowing is the most useful habit of the whole session. After Mathematics Paper 1 on 23 October, trigonometry, geometry and statistics are the entire world until Monday; calculus is over. After Physical Sciences Paper 1 on 30 October, it is chemistry only. What each paper weights, so you can choose the two topics sensibly, is set out in preparing for the 2026 NSC Mathematics exam and last minute Physical Sciences revision.
The method inside those sessions should be answering from memory and marking it, not reading. That is set out in active recall revision, and it matters more in a gap than at any other time, because there are only a few hours and rereading will waste all of them.
How do you keep going across six weeks?
By protecting sleep and meals rather than by trying harder. The session runs from 13 October to 26 November, which is longer than most learners plan for, and the failures in the last fortnight are almost always exhaustion rather than ignorance. A fixed bedtime, ordinary meals, and at least one afternoon a week that is genuinely off will do more for the November papers than an extra hour each night in October.
- Keep the wake-up time fixed, including on days with no paper. Almost every sitting is at 09:00.
- Eat properly on paper days. What and when is covered in exam season eating.
- Take the afternoon of a finished subject off. When both papers of a subject are done, that is worth marking.
- Do not bank sleep debt for the quiet week. It does not work like that, as the evidence in sleep before exams sets out.
- Plan the last fortnight in advance. By mid-November motivation is thin and a plan made in October is what carries it.
Where does a single tutoring session fit in a gap?
On one named topic, booked in advance, and not late at night. The highest value slots in the entire year are the weekends between the two papers of a subject, because the learner knows exactly what they could not do on Friday and the next paper is on Monday. Book those in October rather than on the day, because every family writing the same paper wants the same evening.
One session, one topic, with the question they got stuck on sent ahead of it. That is the whole brief. How to set the session up and what online adds during the writing period is covered in online tutoring during matric exams, which is the companion to this page rather than a repeat of it.
Where does Apex Academic Centre fit in?
In the gaps, which is where tutoring is worth most during a writing session. Apex matches a learner to a verified tutor by subject, curriculum and grade on the MyAPEX app, online or in person, across CAPS, IEB, Cambridge, Pearson Edexcel and IB, with live availability for the specific evening you need. Apex is a tutoring provider, not an examination centre, and does not set or invigilate any paper.
Lessons delivered on Apex’s Custom LMS are recorded, which suits a gap particularly well: a worked example on Saturday afternoon can be replayed on Sunday night before Monday’s paper. Book a tutor on MyAPEX, or see the full list of subjects offered. No tutoring service can promise a mark, and Apex does not. What a session in a gap changes is whether a learner walks into Paper 2 able to start the question that beat them in Paper 1.
Frequently asked questions
What should you do the day between two exam papers?
Work on one subject only, in two short sessions, and go to bed early. Pick the two topics you are least sure of in the next paper and answer questions on them rather than rereading notes. For a Paper 1 to Paper 2 gap, only Paper 2 content matters, because Paper 1 is finished.
Should you discuss an exam paper with friends afterwards?
No. Comparing answers tells you what a confident classmate thinks rather than what the memorandum says, and it converts a finished paper into anxiety about the next one. For Cambridge candidates it is also against the rules: their candidate information says not to discuss paper content until the Key Time or the end of the assessment window.
How long are the gaps between matric papers in 2026?
Usually three days between the two papers of a subject, with one weekend in between. Mathematics is 23 and 26 October, Physical Sciences 30 October and 2 November, Life Sciences 13 and 16 November. There are also four days with no papers at all, on 3, 4, 5 and 9 November.
What should a learner do in the hour after writing a paper?
Nothing academic. Eat, drink water, leave the building and let the adrenaline drop. A three-hour paper is physically tiring, and the hour afterwards is the worst hour of the session for studying, judging your own performance or deciding what to do next.
Is it worth booking a tutor during the exam period?
Yes, for a single session on one named topic in the gap between two papers, booked in advance. The weekend between Paper 1 and Paper 2 is the highest value tutoring slot of the year, because the learner knows exactly what they could not do and the next paper is days away.
