Online Tutoring During Matric Exams: How It Supports Learners
Once the papers start on 13 October, the question changes. It is no longer how to cover a syllabus, it is what can usefully be done in the two or three days between one paper and the next, by a learner who is tired.

The 2026 National Senior Certificate papers run from 13 October to 26 November (DBE timetable, PDF), which is six weeks of writing. What happens in the gaps decides several papers. What can realistically be done between papers?
One or two things per gap, not a revision programme. A worked example of the question type a learner keeps failing. A pass through the prescribed proofs or definitions for the next paper. A marked question from the last practice paper, corrected properly. Anything longer competes with sleep, and by the third week of writing, sleep wins every argument about marginal marks.
Look at the actual gaps on the timetable. Mathematics Paper 1 is Friday 23 October and Paper 2 is Monday 26 October, so there is one weekend between them. Physical Sciences Paper 1 is Friday 30 October and Paper 2 Monday 2 November: the same shape. Those weekends are the highest value tutoring slots in the entire year, and they are known now. Book the weekend slots in advance. Every family writing the same papers wants the same two evenings. A tutor booked in September for 24 October is a tutor you actually get.
Why does online work particularly well in this period?
Four reasons specific to exam season. No travel at either end, which can be an hour saved in a day that has none. Short sessions are practical, because a forty-minute online slot is workable where a forty-minute visit is not. The choice of tutor is national rather than local, which matters when you need one particular subject at short notice. And the session is recorded, so it can be watched again the night before.
The working method suits it too. In Mathematics and Physical Sciences the learner writes, holds the page to the camera, and the tutor marks it live, which is the same thing that would happen across a table. What can a parent see and check?
More than in an in-person arrangement. Lessons delivered on Apex’s Custom LMS are logged, and a parent may view a recording of their own child’s lesson, so you never depend on a tired teenager’s summary of the hour. Messages between a tutor and a client, parent or student may be reviewed by authorised Apex personnel for safeguarding and quality assurance, and contact details stay private because Apex coordinates the booking.

What should you not try to do during the exams?
Start a new subject, add a second tutor, introduce a new study method, or book long sessions late at night. All four cost more in fatigue than they return in marks. How do you set up a session so it is worth the hour?
Name the topic when you book, send the marked question, and pick a time that is not late. A tutor who knows before the session that the learner cannot start Euclidean Geometry proofs opens with one. A session booked as “Maths help” spends its first twenty minutes finding out what everyone already knew, and in exam season there are no spare twenty minutes.
- One topic per session, named in the booking.
- The marked past paper or question, photographed and attached.
- A quiet shared room, charged laptop, stable connection, and paper and pen on the desk. The learner should be writing, not watching.
- Late afternoon or early evening, not after supper the night before a paper.
- Ten minutes afterwards to redo the same question alone, while it is fresh.
