Apex Academic Centre is looking for Cambridge Physics tutors who can teach at AS and A Level, online across South Africa and internationally. You set your own hours, we bring you the learners.

This is an ongoing opening and one of our scarcest skills. A Level Physics tutors who know the Cambridge papers, including the practical assessment, are hard to find, so we keep a standing pool and match you when a learner comes in.
About the role
Cambridge AS and A Level Physics learners are usually in Years 12 and 13, often working toward an engineering or science degree requirement. The common failure is not effort. It is that A Level Physics asks for a model to be applied to an unfamiliar situation, and a learner trained to recognise question types has nothing to fall back on.
You would teach one to one, online, on Apex’s own platform. Lessons are booked through MyAPEX and you accept the requests that fit your diary. Learners at this level commonly want a regular weekly slot across the year.
What you would be doing

Teaching Cambridge AS and A Level Physics one to one, across mechanics, materials, waves, electricity, fields, and the further topics at A2 including quantum and nuclear physics.

Teaching the practical papers, including planning, analysis, uncertainties and the treatment of error, which learners rarely get enough time on at school.

Building the mathematical fluency the subject assumes, especially where a learner’s Physics is being held back by their algebra or their handling of logarithms and graphs.

Teaching application to unfamiliar contexts, which is what separates a B from an A at this level, rather than drilling more of the same question types.

Being honest about your coverage. If you are confident to AS but not through A2, say so on your profile and Apex matches you accordingly.

Keeping communication on the platform. All lesson communication and homework runs through MyAPEX, which is how Apex keeps a record for the parent and the learner.
What we need from you
A degree with a substantial physics or engineering component, and normally a teaching qualification such as a BEd or a PGCE.
Demonstrable A Level experience. You have taught or tutored Cambridge Physics at AS or A Level and you know the paper structure, including the practical assessment.
An advantage, not a requirement: SACE registration. Many of the strongest tutors are graduates, postgraduates or subject specialists rather than registered schoolteachers. Where you do hold SACE registration, Apex verifies it and shows it on your profile, and parents do look for it.
A police clearance certificate if you tutor in person. Apex requires one for in-person tutoring. It is not required to tutor online, and you can add it later if you decide to teach face to face.
A laptop or desktop, a webcam, a stable internet connection and a quiet room to teach from. Apex checks all four.
The ability to draw and derive on a shared screen while you talk. A tablet or graphics tablet makes a real difference in this subject.
Helpful but not required: A Level Mathematics, since many Physics learners need both.
What Apex verifies before your first lesson
Verification is a condition of engagement
Apex verifies who you are and what you are qualified to teach before you take a booking. A self-declaration is not enough, which is why we ask for documents rather than assurances. What is checked depends on how you teach: in-person tutoring carries one additional requirement, because the lesson happens face to face.
- Identity. Your ID or passport, and that the name on it matches your qualifications
- Qualifications. The certificates behind the subjects and levels you want to teach
- Police clearance. Required for in-person tutoring
- SACE and other credentials. Verified and shown on your profile where you hold them, as an advantage rather than a requirement
- Equipment. Machine, camera, connection and teaching room

How the work reaches you
Learners come to you
You are matched on subject, curriculum and the hours you have actually marked as available. You accept or decline each request.
Paid on the 2nd
Tutor fees are paid monthly, on the 2nd of the month, per lesson actually delivered. If a date falls on a weekend or public holiday, it moves to the next business day.
You set the hours
No minimum, no fixed timetable. You tutor as an independent contractor and you decide how much work you take.
Questions tutors ask before applying
No. Applications are made through MyAPEX, where you build a tutor profile once: your subjects, your curricula, your qualifications and your availability. Apex no longer accepts CVs or applications by email, because the profile is what parents read when they choose a tutor.
Apex tutors are independent contractors, not employees. You set your own hours, you accept the bookings you want, and you are responsible for your own tax and statutory obligations. This is set out in the Tutor Terms and Conditions you accept when you register.
Yes, and it is often why a learner books. You are teaching planning, analysis, uncertainty and error treatment, and how to answer on them. Learners do the apparatus work at school.
Yes, and subject depth is genuinely valued. Be aware that Apex verifies SACE registration as part of screening, so you would need to be registered or eligible to register, and you will need to know the Cambridge papers, not just the physics.
You complete your profile on MyAPEX and upload your documents. Apex verifies them, and once you are cleared your profile goes live and you start receiving matched requests in your subjects. You are not charged anything to apply or to be listed.
