The honest answer is that they do different jobs. A group class covers the paper, in order, with a teacher who has marked it. One-on-one finds the gap only your child has and closes it. With four weeks to go, the question is which job you need done.

A group class suits a learner who is roughly on track and needs the whole paper covered in order, with past papers and technique, at a lower cost. One-on-one suits a learner with a specific gap, a subject well behind, or a problem they will not raise in front of others. Many families use group classes for coverage and one-on-one for the one subject that is leaking marks.
The way to decide is not a personality quiz. It is the first timed past paper in each subject, marked honestly. If the marks are spread thinly across the paper, coverage is the problem and a class fixes it. If they are lost in two or three topics, a gap is the problem and a tutor fixes it. What does a group class do well before exams?
Coverage, pace and cost. A group class works through the whole syllabus in the order of the paper, led by a teacher who knows how the memorandum credits marks, with past papers as the material. It keeps a learner moving when motivation is thin, it puts them alongside others writing the same paper, and per hour it costs a fraction of a private tutor. Which learner suits which?
A learner who is passing but wants a better mark, studies well with structure, and lost marks across the whole paper suits a group class. A learner who is failing a subject, whose marks are lost in a few specific topics, who has a learning difficulty, or who has decided they are bad at the subject suits one-on-one. A learner with one weak subject and several middling ones often suits both: a tutor for the weak one, classes for the rest.

With four weeks to go, what is the sensible combination?
Group classes for the subjects where coverage is the problem, one-on-one for the single subject that is leaking marks in specific topics, and both booked in week one rather than week three. The first written paper on the national Department of Basic Education timetable is 13 October 2026, with Mathematics Paper 1 on 23 October, so a tutor booked now has eight sessions before Mathematics; booked in October, three.

For a tutor: their qualification in that subject, whether they will work from your child’s marked past paper, and what to expect after three lessons.
