How Matric Past Papers Can Improve Your Exam Performance
Every matric learner knows they should be doing past papers. Far fewer are doing them in the way that actually moves a mark, which is timed, unaided, and then marked honestly against the memorandum before anything else happens.
For matriculants and parentsHow do matric past papers actually improve your results?
By telling you where the marks are leaking, which nothing else does. Reading notes shows you what you recognise; a timed past paper shows you what you can produce under pressure, in the format you will be examined in. Marked against the official memorandum, it turns a vague worry about a subject into a list of two or three topics, and that list is the only revision plan you need.
The Department of Basic Education publishes previous National Senior Certificate question papers and memoranda free on its NSC past examination papers page. There is no better preparation material and it costs nothing. If a paper shows one subject is in trouble, you can book a verified tutor on the MyAPEX app for that subject and hand them the marked script.
How should you write a past paper?
Exactly as you will write the real one. Full duration, printed on the timetable. The sitting time where you can, because almost every 2026 paper is at 09:00. Nothing on the desk that will not be in the hall: no notes, no textbook, no phone. One sitting, no pausing. A paper written in three sittings with the memorandum open beside you is a reading exercise, and it will flatter you.
- Print it if you can. Working on paper is the exam skill. Reading a PDF on a laptop is not.
- Time it with a clock you can see. Running out of time is one of the four reasons marks are lost, and you cannot diagnose it if you never ran the clock.
- Start with the most recent November paper and work backwards. The closer the paper is to this year, the closer the framing.
- Do not stop when it gets hard. Leave a gap, move on, come back. That is also what you will do in the hall.
- Write the whole paper. Question 1 to the end. Stamina is part of what is being tested across three hours.
How do you mark it properly?
With the official memorandum, strictly, on someone else’s standard rather than your own. Memoranda award marks per step, not per final answer, so mark each line as the memorandum does. Do not give yourself a mark for something you “would have written”. Then total it, and write the percentage at the top, because the number is the thing you will compare against in three weeks.
Marking your own paper generously is the single most common way this exercise is wasted. The point is not the score. The point is an honest list of what went wrong, which only exists if the marking was honest.
The most useful discovery. Most learners find at least one question where the method was right and marks were still lost, because working was not shown. Memoranda pay for method. A correct answer with no working can score less than a wrong answer with the right method written out.
What do you do with the marked paper?
Label every lost mark with one of four reasons: did not know it, knew it but ran out of time, misread the question, or made an arithmetic slip. Then count them. Whichever reason dominates tells you what to fix, and the four need completely different fixes. Most learners assume every lost mark is the first reason. Usually it is not, which is good news, because the other three are faster to fix.
| Reason the mark was lost | What it actually means | The fix |
|---|---|---|
| Did not know it | A genuine content gap, usually in two or three topics | Ten questions on that topic, then a fresh past-paper question on it |
| Ran out of time | Pacing, not knowledge | Write the next paper with a mark-per-minute target and answer in mark order |
| Misread the question | Reading too fast under pressure | Underline the instruction word before answering. “Hence” means use the previous part |
| Arithmetic slip | Calculator or transcription error | Show every step, and sanity-check the answer against the question’s context |
A paper marked this way takes about forty minutes and is worth more than a weekend of rereading. It is also the exact brief a tutor needs: the topic list plus the reason pattern.
How many past papers should you write?
Enough to see a pattern and then a change: roughly one per subject in the diagnosis week, the topics fixed in between, and another one per subject about two weeks later to check the fix worked. For the subjects you are most worried about, more. Writing ten papers and marking none of them is worth less than writing two and marking both, because the marking is where the learning happens.
This is the spine of our four week study plan: week one diagnoses with papers, week two fixes the topics, week three rehearses with papers again. Compare the week-one and week-three percentages subject by subject. That comparison, not a feeling about how revision is going, is how you know whether the plan is working.
Which papers and memoranda should you use?
The official ones for your assessment body. CAPS learners use the Department of Basic Education’s past NSC papers and memoranda, free online, most recent first. IEB learners use IEB past papers, which come through the school, because the IEB sets and marks its own papers. The free DBE Mind the Gap study guides are the companion for fixing a topic once a paper has named it.
Both DBE resources are on education.gov.za: the NSC past examination papers and the Mind the Gap study guides. Why the two routes differ, and what else changes between them, is in our guide to CAPS vs IEB exam preparation.
Use the examination guidelines too. For Mathematics the DBE publishes how each paper splits its marks by topic and by difficulty, which tells you which past-paper questions are worth the most practice. We set those out in preparing for the 2026 NSC Mathematics exam.
What can a tutor do with a marked past paper?
Start work in the first ten minutes instead of spending a lesson finding out where the learner is. A marked script shows a tutor the actual error rather than the reported one: the sign dropped when a term moves, the proof that cannot start, the question answered in the wrong form. That is why sending the marked paper before the first lesson is worth more than any description a parent can give.
Apex Academic Centre matches a learner with a tutor verified in that subject, curriculum and grade, online or in person through the MyAPEX app, and lessons delivered on Apex’s Custom LMS are recorded so a topic can be replayed the night before the paper. Apex is a tutoring provider, not an examination centre; the papers and memoranda are the Department’s. Book a tutor on MyAPEX and send the marked script with the booking. No tutoring service can promise a mark, and Apex does not.
Frequently asked questions
Where can I download matric past papers for free?
The Department of Basic Education publishes previous National Senior Certificate question papers and their memoranda free on the NSC past examination papers page at education.gov.za. IEB past papers are distributed through IEB-registered schools rather than published free online, so ask your school for them.
How many past papers should I do before matric exams?
About one per subject to diagnose, then another per subject two weeks later to check the fix worked, and more for the subjects you are most worried about. Writing many papers and marking none is worth less than writing two and marking both honestly, because the marking is where the learning happens.
Should I use the memorandum while writing a past paper?
No. Write it closed-book, timed, in one sitting, exactly as you will write the real paper. Then mark it with the memorandum afterwards. A paper written with the memorandum open tells you what you recognise, not what you can produce under pressure, and it will flatter you.
Why do I lose marks when my answer is correct?
Because memoranda award marks per step, not only for the final answer. A correct answer with no working shown can score less than a wrong answer with the correct method written out. Showing every step is the single cheapest source of extra marks in most papers.
How far back should past papers go?
Start with the most recent November papers and work backwards, because the closer a paper is to this year the closer its framing and structure. Three years is plenty for diagnosis. Older papers are still useful for extra practice on a specific topic once you know which topic to practise.
Write one. Mark it honestly.
The paper tells you what to fix. A tutor fixes it.
Send the marked script with your booking and a verified Apex tutor starts on the actual gaps in the first ten minutes, online or in person.
