Term 3 ends on 23 September and Term 4 begins on 6 October. That is twelve days off, followed by one week of school, and then the papers start. It is the last uninterrupted block of study time a matriculant will get, and it is easy to waste.

Three things, in order. Write one full past paper per problem subject in the first weekend and mark it honestly, which names the weak topics. Spend the middle of the break fixing two of them, not six. Then write a second paper near the end to check the fix held. Around that, keep normal sleep and take at least two full days completely off, because twelve days of unbroken cramming produces a tired learner, not a prepared one.
The dates make the case. The public school Term 3 ends on 23 September and Term 4 begins on 6 October, on the national school calendar published at gov.za. The first written National Senior Certificate paper is 13 October. So the break is twelve days, Term 4 adds one week, and that is the whole of the time left. How much time does the break actually give you?
Twelve days, from 24 September to 5 October, then one week of Term 4 before the first paper on 13 October. If a learner does three focused hours on eight of those twelve days, that is twenty-four hours of revision, which is more uninterrupted study time than the whole of Term 4 will offer once classes, assessments and travel resume. Counted properly it is a lot. Spent vaguely it disappears.

How do you find the two topics worth fixing?
From the trial paper, not from a feeling. Take the most recent trial or preliminary paper in the subject you are worried about, write it again under time with the book closed, and mark it against the official memorandum. Then list every topic that lost marks and pick the two that lost the most. Two topics is a realistic target for twelve days. Six is a list that gets abandoned by the Thursday.
Most learners already have the raw material and never use it. A marked trial paper is sitting in a bag somewhere, and it is the single most honest document about where the marks are going. If the trial was marked at school, the teacher has already done half the work; read the comments rather than the total.
Do it in the first weekend of the break. A diagnosis on 24 or 25 September leaves ten days to act on it. The same diagnosis on 3 October leaves two, and at that point you are just measuring the problem rather than fixing it.

What does a realistic day in the break look like?
Three focused hours, not eight. Two blocks of about ninety minutes with a real break between them, usually mid-morning and early afternoon, each ending with something marked. The rest of the day is ordinary life. A learner who tries to study from nine to five on day one will not be studying at all by day four, and the pattern that survives twelve days is the one that leaves room for the holiday to be a holiday.
- Same times each day. The routine is what removes the daily negotiation about when to start.
- One subject per block. Not a general revision session; a named topic from the marked paper.
- End each block with marked work. Questions attempted and checked, not pages read.
- Two full days off, deliberately. Put them in the plan at the start, so they are rest rather than collapse.
- Keep sleep normal. Almost every paper is written at 09:00, and a holiday sleep pattern that drifts to 2am takes a week to undo.

Does the break mean the same thing for every curriculum?
No, and this is the part most holiday advice gets wrong. CAPS and IEB candidates are on a school break with their first papers on 13 October, so the twelve days are preparation time. Cambridge candidates are in a different position entirely: the November series runs from 28 September, so for them the break is not a break, it is the start of the examinations.

Is a revision group enough, or do you need one-on-one?
A group suits a learner who is broadly on track and needs structure, pace and company through a long holiday. One-on-one suits a learner whose marked trial paper points at two specific topics, or who has one subject well behind. The combination many families use in a break is one diagnostic one-on-one session early, to name the gaps, followed by group revision for the coverage.
That sequencing matters more in a holiday than in term time, because a group that starts on 26 September is only useful if the learner already knows which sessions they most need. Book early in the break, not late. Every family writing the same papers wants the same week. A session booked for 28 September is a session you actually get; the same request on 4 October competes with everyone who left it until then.
What should parents do, and what should they leave alone?
Do the logistics and the environment: agree the daily times before the break starts, keep the house predictable, hold a normal bedtime, and check the examination permit against the timetable while there is still time to query an error. Leave the content alone. Asking once a week which topics lost marks is more useful than asking every evening how the studying went.
