Apex Academic Centre is looking for in-person tutors across KwaZulu-Natal, through Durban, the North Coast and Pietermaritzburg. You choose the areas you travel to and the hours you work, we bring you the learners.

This is an ongoing opening covering the province. KwaZulu-Natal is one of the areas where we most often have a learner and no verified tutor within reasonable travelling distance, so a tutor here is unlikely to wait long.
About the role
KwaZulu-Natal demand runs from the Durban metro up the North Coast and inland to Pietermaritzburg, with learners spread widely between them. Distances are longer here than in the other metros, which makes an honest travel radius more important, not less.
Lessons happen at the learner’s home. You are matched through MyAPEX on subject, curriculum, availability and the areas you have said you will travel to, and you accept or decline each request. Many tutors combine in-person learners nearby with online work elsewhere.
What you would be doing

Travelling to the learner and teaching one to one in their home, in the subjects and grades you have listed on your profile.

Setting your travel radius honestly, which matters more in this province than in the compact metros. A learner an hour up the coast is a different commitment from one two suburbs away.

Following the learner’s actual school programme, CAPS or IEB, including their term planner and assessment dates, rather than running a parallel course alongside school.

Treating the appointment as fixed. Parents build the afternoon around the session, and in a province where a cancelled lesson can mean an hour of wasted travel for you as well, predictability serves everybody.

Working within the professional boundaries in the Tutor Terms, which matter most precisely because these lessons happen in someone’s home rather than on a screen.

Keeping communication on the platform. All lesson communication and homework runs through MyAPEX, which is how Apex keeps a record for the parent and the learner.
What we need from you
A relevant teaching qualification, typically a BEd or a PGCE, or a degree in your subject area.
Your own reliable transport, and a clear view of which parts of KwaZulu-Natal you will genuinely travel to.
An advantage, not a requirement: SACE registration. Many of the strongest tutors are graduates, postgraduates or subject specialists rather than registered schoolteachers. Where you do hold SACE registration, Apex verifies it and shows it on your profile, and parents do look for it.
A valid police clearance certificate. This is required for in-person tutoring, because the lesson happens in a home or a shared venue. It matters more, not less, when you are in the room.
Solid subject knowledge in the grades you list. Mathematics and the Sciences are the most requested, but every core subject comes up.
Consistency. In-person tutoring works through steady weekly contact, and a learner who never knows whether the session is happening stops preparing for it.
Helpful but not required: isiZulu as a teaching language, and willingness to tutor online as well, which widens the requests that reach you.
What Apex verifies before your first lesson
Verification is a condition of engagement
Apex verifies who you are and what you are qualified to teach before you take a booking. A self-declaration is not enough, which is why we ask for documents rather than assurances. What is checked depends on how you teach: in-person tutoring carries one additional requirement, because the lesson happens face to face.
- Identity. Your ID or passport, and that the name on it matches your qualifications
- Qualifications. The certificates behind the subjects and levels you want to teach
- Police clearance. Required for in-person tutoring
- SACE and other credentials. Verified and shown on your profile where you hold them, as an advantage rather than a requirement
- Equipment. Machine, camera, connection and teaching room

How the work reaches you
Learners come to you
You are matched on subject, curriculum and the hours you have actually marked as available. You accept or decline each request.
Paid on the 2nd
Tutor fees are paid monthly, on the 2nd of the month, per lesson actually delivered. If a date falls on a weekend or public holiday, it moves to the next business day.
You set the hours
No minimum, no fixed timetable. You tutor as an independent contractor and you decide how much work you take.
Questions tutors ask before applying
No. Applications are made through MyAPEX, where you build a tutor profile once: your subjects, your curricula, your qualifications and your availability. Apex no longer accepts CVs or applications by email, because the profile is what parents read when they choose a tutor.
Apex tutors are independent contractors, not employees. You set your own hours, you accept the bookings you want, and you are responsible for your own tax and statutory obligations. This is set out in the Tutor Terms and Conditions you accept when you register.
On the subjects and grades you list, your stated availability, and the areas you have said you will travel to. Every request comes to you to accept or decline.
It is the opposite of a problem. Learners outside the Durban metro are the ones we most often cannot place, so a verified tutor on the North Coast or around Pietermaritzburg is genuinely valuable.
Strongly recommended here. Distances in KwaZulu-Natal are long, so the tutors who do best keep a few in-person learners close to home and take the rest of their week online.
You complete your profile on MyAPEX and upload your documents. Apex verifies them, and once you are cleared your profile goes live and you start receiving matched requests in your subjects. You are not charged anything to apply or to be listed.
