Apex Academic Centre is looking for qualified Cambridge Mathematics tutors to take IGCSE learners through Core and Extended, online across South Africa and internationally. You set your own hours, we bring you the learners.

This is an ongoing opening. Apex places Cambridge Mathematics learners throughout the year, so we keep a standing pool of verified IGCSE Maths tutors and match you when a learner in your subject and your available hours comes in.
About the role
Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics is one of the subjects Apex is asked for most often, and one of the hardest to staff. Learners come to us from Cambridge schools across South Africa and from families schooling internationally, usually somewhere in Years 10 and 11, and usually either sitting on the Core and Extended decision or working toward a specific grade in the June or November series.
You would teach one to one, online, on Apex’s own platform. Lessons are booked through MyAPEX, and you accept the requests that fit your diary. There is no minimum number of hours and no fixed timetable: some tutors take two learners a week around a full-time teaching post, others build a full week of sessions.
What you would be doing

Teaching Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics one to one, across number, algebra, coordinate geometry, mensuration, trigonometry, probability and statistics, at Core or Extended depending on the learner.

Working to the syllabus the learner is actually sitting. Cambridge publishes the syllabus and past papers by series, and lessons should track the paper the learner is being entered for rather than a generic maths course.

Building exam technique deliberately, including method marks, working out, calculator and non-calculator papers, and the timing that separates a learner who knows the content from one who finishes the paper.

Diagnosing the gap, not just the topic. A Year 11 learner struggling with quadratics is often carrying a Year 8 problem with fractions or negatives, and Cambridge learners frequently arrive from a different curriculum.

Setting and marking work between lessons, through the app, so parents can see what was set and what came back.

Keeping communication on the platform. All lesson communication and homework runs through MyAPEX, which is how Apex keeps a record for the parent and the learner.
What we need from you
A relevant qualification, typically a BEd, a PGCE, or a degree with a strong mathematics major.
Demonstrable Cambridge experience. You have taught or tutored IGCSE Mathematics and you know the Core and Extended split, the paper structure and the grade thresholds.
An advantage, not a requirement: SACE registration. Many of the strongest tutors are graduates, postgraduates or subject specialists rather than registered schoolteachers. Where you do hold SACE registration, Apex verifies it and shows it on your profile, and parents do look for it.
A police clearance certificate if you tutor in person. Apex requires one for in-person tutoring. It is not required to tutor online, and you can add it later if you decide to teach face to face.
A laptop or desktop, a webcam, a stable internet connection and a quiet room to teach from. Apex checks all four.
Reliability above everything. Learners and parents plan around your confirmed sessions.
Helpful but not required: experience with Cambridge O Level or AS and A Level Mathematics, and with learners moving across from CAPS or IEB.
What Apex verifies before your first lesson
Verification is a condition of engagement
Apex verifies who you are and what you are qualified to teach before you take a booking. A self-declaration is not enough, which is why we ask for documents rather than assurances. What is checked depends on how you teach: in-person tutoring carries one additional requirement, because the lesson happens face to face.
- Identity. Your ID or passport, and that the name on it matches your qualifications
- Qualifications. The certificates behind the subjects and levels you want to teach
- Police clearance. Required for in-person tutoring
- SACE and other credentials. Verified and shown on your profile where you hold them, as an advantage rather than a requirement
- Equipment. Machine, camera, connection and teaching room

How the work reaches you
Learners come to you
You are matched on subject, curriculum and the hours you have actually marked as available. You accept or decline each request.
Paid on the 2nd
Tutor fees are paid monthly, on the 2nd of the month, per lesson actually delivered. If a date falls on a weekend or public holiday, it moves to the next business day.
You set the hours
No minimum, no fixed timetable. You tutor as an independent contractor and you decide how much work you take.
Questions tutors ask before applying
No. Applications are made through MyAPEX, where you build a tutor profile once: your subjects, your curricula, your qualifications and your availability. Apex no longer accepts CVs or applications by email, because the profile is what parents read when they choose a tutor.
Apex tutors are independent contractors, not employees. You set your own hours, you accept the bookings you want, and you are responsible for your own tax and statutory obligations. This is set out in the Tutor Terms and Conditions you accept when you register.
Honestly, it depends on you. The tutors who get the most bookings are the ones with a complete profile, wide stated availability and a fast response to requests. Cambridge Mathematics is a subject we are short of, so a verified IGCSE Maths tutor with open afternoons is unlikely to sit idle.
Yes. This particular opening is online, but Apex places in person tutors too, mostly in Gauteng, the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal. You choose which modes you offer on your profile, and you can offer both.
You complete your profile on MyAPEX and upload your documents. Apex verifies them, and once you are cleared your profile goes live and you start receiving matched requests in your subjects. You are not charged anything to apply or to be listed.
