Why Subject Specific Tutoring Works Better During Exam Season

General homework help is useful for most of the year. In the last month it is the wrong tool, because by then the marks are not spread across a subject: they are sitting in two or three named topics inside one named paper.

Why does subject specific tutoring work better in exam season?

Because examinations are not general. The Department of Basic Education publishes how each paper allocates its marks, and the allocations are lopsided: Mechanics is 65 of Physical Sciences Paper 1’s 150 marks, Trigonometry is 50 of Mathematics Paper 2’s. A tutor who knows that paper works on the topics that carry the marks and the conventions that earn them. A general helper works on whatever the learner brought home.

All year, “help with homework” is a reasonable brief, because the job is keeping up. In September and October the job changes: it is finding and closing specific gaps before a specific paper on a specific date. That is a different skill, and it is worth asking for explicitly when you book a tutor on the MyAPEX app.

01

What does the mark allocation actually look like?

Concentrated. In Mathematics Paper 1, Functions and Graphs plus Differential Calculus are 70 of 150 marks; in Paper 2, Trigonometry and Euclidean Geometry are 90 of 150. In Physical Sciences Paper 1, Mechanics and Electricity and magnetism are 120 of 150; in Paper 2, Chemical change is 92 of 150. Those are the Department’s own published weightings, and they decide where an hour of tutoring is worth most.

Paper The two heaviest topics Marks of 150
Mathematics Paper 1 Functions and Graphs, Differential Calculus 70
Mathematics Paper 2 Trigonometry, Euclidean Geometry 90
Physical Sciences Paper 1 Mechanics, Electricity and magnetism 120
Physical Sciences Paper 2 Chemical change (with Matter and materials at 58) 92

Both sets come from the Department of Basic Education’s own examination guidelines, the Mathematics guidelines and the Physical Sciences guidelines, both published on education.gov.za.

A tutor who does not know these will distribute an hour evenly across a syllabus, which is exactly the wrong allocation in October. The detail behind each is in our guides to the 2026 NSC Mathematics exam and last minute Physical Sciences revision.

02

What does a specialist know that a generalist does not?

How the memorandum pays. In Physical Sciences the official marking guidelines award marks for the correct formula, the correct substitution and the correct answer with a unit, and a correct answer carrying the wrong unit forfeits the mark. In Mathematics, marks are allocated per step, so working that is not shown is not paid for. A specialist teaches to those rules. A generalist teaches the content and hopes.

  • The conventions. What “hence” requires, when a proof must be quoted, when a diagram earns marks in its own right.
  • The recurring question shapes. A specialist has seen ten years of a paper and knows which forms come back.
  • The prerequisite chain. Which Grade 10 topic is actually blocking the Grade 12 question in front of them.
  • What not to spend time on. Fifteen marks is fifteen marks, however interesting the topic is.
03

Is general tutoring ever the better choice?

Yes, in three cases. Early in the year, when the job is keeping up rather than closing gaps. For a younger learner, where how something is explained matters more than depth. And where marks are thin across every subject, which usually points at workload, method or something outside school rather than a subject gap. In exam season, for a Grade 12 learner with one failing subject, specificity wins.

If the marks are thin everywhere rather than concentrated, more tutoring is not the first answer. Look at the routine, the sleep and the study method first; the common mistakes are in common matric exam preparation mistakes, and the signs worth acting on are in signs your child needs a tutor.

04

How do you brief a subject tutor properly?

With a marked past paper and a list of topics, not a subject name. “Grade 12 Mathematics” tells a tutor nothing they cannot see on the booking. “Loses marks on trigonometric identities and cannot start a Euclidean Geometry proof, Paper 2 on 26 October” is a lesson plan. Add the curriculum, CAPS or IEB, and the dates of the papers. That brief turns the first lesson from diagnosis into work.

  • The marked script, photographed and sent with the booking.
  • The topic list, with the reason each mark was lost where you know it.
  • The paper dates. A tutor can sequence four weeks backwards from 23 October.
  • The curriculum and grade. CAPS and IEB are assessed differently.
  • One subject. Two subjects in four weeks with one tutor usually means neither gets finished.
05

How do you check a tutor is actually a specialist?

Look at the qualification rather than the years. It should name the subject: a degree majoring in it, an engineering or science degree, or a teaching qualification with that subject as a major. On Apex the certificate has been checked against the specific subjects, curricula and levels the tutor asks to teach, so a profile listed for Grade 12 CAPS Mathematics has shown one. Then ask which paper they are strongest in.

The full checklist, including the four questions worth asking before the first lesson, is in choosing a Mathematics and Physical Sciences tutor before matric. One caution that applies especially to Physical Sciences: it is two disciplines, Physics in Paper 1 and Chemistry in Paper 2, and a tutor strong in one is not automatically strong in the other.

06

Where does Apex Academic Centre fit in?

Apex lists tutors by subject, curriculum and grade rather than as general tutors, and verifies each tutor’s identity and qualifications against exactly those before they may teach. That is what makes a specific booking possible: a parent can filter for Grade 12 CAPS Physical Sciences and see only tutors whose certificates support it. Lessons run online or in person through the MyAPEX app.

Lessons delivered on Apex’s Custom LMS are recorded, so a worked example on the exact topic a learner fears can be replayed the night before the paper, which is a specialist advantage a general session rarely produces. Apex is a tutoring provider, not an examination centre. Book a subject tutor on MyAPEX, or see the full list of subjects offered. No tutoring service can promise a mark, and Apex does not.

Frequently asked questions

What is subject specific tutoring?

Tutoring booked for one named subject at one named level, with a tutor whose qualification is in that subject, rather than general homework help across whatever a learner brings home. In exam season it matters because marks sit in specific topics inside specific papers, and those are what a specialist works on.

Is a subject specialist better than an experienced general tutor?

For a Grade 12 learner in the last month, usually yes. The examination papers allocate marks unevenly, so knowing which topics carry them and how the memorandum credits working is worth more than general teaching experience. Earlier in the year, or for a younger learner, a good general tutor is often the better fit.

Can one tutor cover several subjects before the exams?

It is rarely the best use of four weeks. Even where a tutor is qualified in two subjects, two sets of gaps in four weeks usually means neither is finished. Book one subject, brief it properly with a marked past paper, and add a second tutor if another subject also needs work.

What should I send a tutor before the first lesson?

A photograph of a marked past paper, the list of topics that lost marks with the reason where you know it, the curriculum and grade, and the dates of the papers. That turns the first lesson from diagnosis into work and is worth more than any description of how the year has gone.

How do I know a tutor really knows the subject?

Read the qualification rather than the years of experience: it should name the subject. On Apex the certificate is verified against the specific subjects, curricula and levels a tutor asks to teach. Then ask which paper they are strongest in, which matters most in Physical Sciences, where Paper 1 is Physics and Paper 2 is Chemistry.

Specific beats general in October

Book the subject, not a tutor in general.

Filter by subject, curriculum and grade on MyAPEX, send the marked past paper with the booking, and the first lesson starts on the topics that carry the marks.
